Decoy Primary School – Dragon Fly and Willow Tree Mural

Decoy Primary School in Newton Abbot invited me to lead an art project that would enhance their learning environment and help bring together members of the school community together. After discussions with their Art Leader, I came up with a two day project which would be inspired by Decoy Lake and nature reserve which is close to the school.

On day 1, Students from Nursery to Year 6 explored how artists had portrayed dragon flies and willow trees in their work. The students came up with fantastic ideas of their own which were then amalgamated into two designs.

These were then transferred onto two large sheets of 12mm ply board that were first undercoated – the dragon fly design would be 3 feet x 3 feet and the willow tree would be a whopping 4 feet x 6 feet!

On day 2, groups of students came to work with me on the designs using masonry paint and in the afternoon, a large group of parents and governors came along to continue the project. Pupils then returned to see what progress had been made and helped with the finishing touches.

This was a really rewarding project for the Decoy school community. Not only did everyone have a thoroughly good time but the combined creative powers of all those involved came up with two beautiful and highly striking murals.
